Return of The Matte

Had a sleepover at my friend Lydia’s last night. In the ’90s, Lydia had perfected the matte red lip. This was quite a feat as the matte lipsticks I remember sucked all the moisture from your lips, bled like crazy and any application missteps just seemed 100 times more obvious than they do with a sheer lipgloss.

Not so coincidentally, matte is back this spring. But the new Lancôme Color Design Matte Lipstick ($26) contains a light-diffusing gel to create a matte look with a creamy formulation. It also contains emollients to keep lips soft, while providing easy-to-apply slip.

While I haven’t tried it yet, the high pigment colours look pretty cool, available in Bronze Show, Corset, Lucky Kiss, Pink Preview, Plum Show, Posh Pink, Stylista and Red Haute). Judging from photos, I’d say that in certain light, it has a hint of shimmer, making it more like a demi-matte. The beauty bloggers are giving it top marks for endurance as well. If you’re in the market for matte, this lipstick sounds like a good bet.
